Photography Mentoring KL

RM200–500/session

Personalised one-on-one mentoring for aspiring photographers who want focused guidance — not generic classroom teaching. Sessions tailored to your specific goals, gear, and skill level. Whether you are just starting out with your first camera or you have been shooting for a while but feel stuck, having a mentor who has navigated the Malaysian photography market makes the difference between growing with purpose and spinning in circles.

What This Service Covers

Each mentoring session is built around your needs. We start by understanding where you are now and where you want to go — then work backwards to create a practical development path. This is not a fixed syllabus. It is responsive coaching that adapts as you grow. Some sessions might focus entirely on reviewing your portfolio. Others might involve going out together to shoot on location so I can give real-time guidance.

Who This Is For

  • Beginners who have bought their first camera and feel overwhelmed by the learning curve
  • Hobbyists ready to transition into paid photography work
  • Part-time photographers who want to go full-time but are unsure about pricing and positioning
  • Content creators looking to improve the quality of their photography
  • Entrepreneurs who want to photograph their own products or services more professionally

What Is Covered

  • Portfolio review and constructive feedback — understanding what makes a strong image and what holds your work back
  • Shooting technique improvement (composition, lighting, posing, camera settings)
  • Gear selection guidance based on your budget, shooting style, and goals — honest advice, not brand loyalty
  • Post-processing workflow optimisation in Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Building a photography business in Malaysia — SSM registration, tax considerations, insurance
  • Pricing strategy, client management, and marketing tactics that work in the local market
  • Social media strategy for photographers — growing an audience that converts to bookings
  • Website planning — what to include, what to skip, and how to structure your portfolio online

Format

In-person or online sessions, 1–2 hours each. In-person sessions can include live shooting practice at a KL location — KLCC Park, Merdeka Square, Chinatown, or any spot relevant to the skills we are working on. Online sessions use Google Meet or Zoom and can include screen-sharing for post-processing reviews.

The Process

  1. Discovery call — A free 15-minute chat to understand your goals, experience level, and what you are struggling with
  2. First session — We dive into your current portfolio and shooting workflow, identify strengths and gaps, and set priorities
  3. Ongoing sessions — Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly sessions based on your pace. Each session builds on the previous one with practical assignments in between
  4. Real-world practice — When appropriate, we go out together to shoot. I demonstrate techniques on the spot and review your images in real time
  5. Progress review — Every few sessions, we step back and look at how far you have come, adjust goals, and celebrate wins

Why Choose Sorot Studio

I am not just a photographer — I am also a web developer who has built an entire business around combining these two skills. That means I can mentor you not just on taking better photos, but on presenting your work professionally online, setting up your portfolio website, and building a brand that attracts the right clients. In the Malaysian market especially, knowing how to market yourself online is just as important as being a good photographer.

Pricing

From RM200 per session. Monthly mentoring packages (4 sessions) from RM700. Live shooting sessions at a premium location may include a small venue or model fee if applicable.
