Photography Photowalks & Meetups KL
Weekend photowalks through KL’s most interesting neighbourhoods — Chinatown, Chow Kit, Little India, Kampung Baru, and beyond. Walk, shoot, learn, and connect with other photographers in a relaxed, social setting. No pressure, no assignments — just a group of people who love photography exploring the city together.
What This Is
A photowalk is a casual group outing where photographers of all levels walk through a chosen neighbourhood and photograph whatever catches their eye. It is part social event, part creative exercise, part urban exploration. Some participants come with professional gear, others with smartphones — everyone is welcome. Along the way, there is usually conversation about technique, gear, composition, and the stories behind the places we visit.
Popular Photowalk Locations
- Chinatown / Petaling Street — Street food vendors, traditional Chinese medicine shops, heritage architecture, and the energy of a market that has been running for over a century
- Chow Kit Market — Raw, authentic daily life. Wet market vendors, spice stalls, morning bustle. One of KL’s most photogenic and underappreciated locations
- Kampung Baru — A Malay village in the heart of KL. Traditional wooden houses against a backdrop of skyscrapers. Cultural contrast at its most striking
- Bukit Bintang / Jalan Alor — Neon lights, night market energy, street food sizzling on open grills. Best visited at dusk for the transition from golden hour to neon glow
- Brickfields / Little India — Colourful sari shops, Hindu temples, flower garlands, and the vibrant energy of KL’s Indian cultural district
- KLCC / City Centre — Modern architecture, the Petronas Towers, KLCC Park reflections, and the Saloma Link Bridge. Clean lines and urban geometry
- Merdeka Square area — Colonial-era buildings, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the Royal Selangor Club, and the River of Life with its blue-lit waterway at night

What to Expect
Each photowalk typically runs 2–3 hours and covers 2–4 kilometres of walking. We meet at a designated starting point, walk a planned route, stop at interesting spots to shoot, and usually end at a cafe or kopitiam for drinks and conversation. During the walk, more experienced photographers naturally share tips with beginners — it is informal mentoring in the most relaxed setting possible.
Bring your camera (any camera, including your phone), comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, and a sense of curiosity. No registration fee for community photowalks — just show up.
How to Join
Follow Sorot Studio on Instagram (@sorot.studio) for announced dates and meeting points. Photowalks are typically held on Saturday or Sunday mornings (to catch good light before the midday heat) or Saturday evenings (for night photography walks). They are free to join — just show up with your camera.
We also organise private photowalk sessions for corporate team-building, birthday groups, or visiting photography clubs. Contact us for custom arrangements.
Why Choose Sorot Studio Photowalks
These are not just aimless walks. Each route is curated by a working photographer who knows KL intimately — the best light at each location, the quietest times to avoid crowds, and the angles that make each spot look its best. It is a photowalk with local knowledge baked in. And if you enjoy the walk and want to take your photography further, our workshops and mentoring sessions are the natural next step.
